n8n vs Zapier vs Make in 2026: pricing, licences and when to write code instead

The same workflow can cost ten times more on one tool than another. Here is how the three bill you, and when I reach for code instead.

Key takeaways

  • n8n bills one execution per complete workflow run, Zapier bills tasks per action, and Make bills credits per module action.
  • The more steps a workflow has, the more n8n’s per-execution model favours you. Simple two-step flows are cheap on all three.
  • Self-hosted n8n Community Edition is free for internal business use, and a developer may build workflows for clients on their own instance, provided clients cannot edit them.
  • Use custom code when volume, logic or reliability outgrow a visual tool.
  • Whatever you choose, build retries, alerts and logging in from day one.

Automation tools connect your apps so repetitive work happens on its own: a form becomes a CRM record, an order triggers an invoice, a failed payment pings your team. n8n, Zapier and Make are the three names that come up most. They look similar on the surface but bill very differently, and that is where surprises start.

How each tool bills you

ToolBilling unitWhat counts
n8nExecutionOne complete workflow run, regardless of steps or data volume
ZapierTaskEach successful action step; triggers and its built-in filters and formatters are free
MakeCreditMostly one credit per module action; AI and bulk features can cost more

Take a ten-step workflow that runs 1,000 times a month. On Zapier that is about 9,000 to 10,000 tasks, on Make about 10,000 credits and on n8n 1,000 executions. For a two-step flow the gap nearly disappears. The more steps a flow has, the more the billing model matters.

Entry prices (checked October 2026)

Entry paid plans as published by the vendors and comparison sites
ToolEntry paid planIncludes
n8n CloudStarter, about €20/month (billed annually)2,500 executions
MakeCore, from about $9/month10,000 credits
ZapierFrom $19.99/month (billed annually)750 tasks
Treat prices as a snapshot

Vendors change plans often, and annual and monthly rates differ. Check each pricing page before you commit, and note that some comparison pages are published by a competing vendor.

Which one when

  • Zapier has the widest app coverage and is the quickest to start. It suits simple automations and non-technical teams, but costs rise quickly at volume.
  • Make gives a visual canvas with good control over branching and data, and is usually cheaper per unit than Zapier.
  • n8n suits complex, high-volume workflows, lets you add code nodes, and can be self-hosted for full control of your data.

The n8n licence, in plain English

Self-hosted n8n Community Edition runs under the Sustainable Use License. According to n8n’s own FAQ you can use it freely to run your own business, build and run workflows for clients on your instance and charge for that work, as long as clients cannot create or edit workflows themselves. You need a commercial licence if you host n8n as a service for clients to build their own workflows, white-label it, or let outside users configure workflows through your product. If you are unsure, n8n asks you to email their licensing team.

This matters when you hire a freelancer. If I build automations for you and run them, that is fine. If your product needs customers to design their own automations, you need the right licence or a different design.

When I write code instead

  • High volume. Millions of events cost far less on a small service than on any per-run plan.
  • Heavy logic. Complex rules, matching and state are easier to test and review in code.
  • Strict reliability. Queues, idempotency and retries are first-class in code, and the system does not depend on a third party’s uptime.
  • Data privacy. Sensitive data stays inside your own infrastructure.

In TelegramCopy, signals flow through Redis queues and workers instead of a visual tool, because losing or duplicating a message would cost real money. In smaller projects, n8n is often the fastest honest answer.

Build for failure from day one

  1. Retries with backoff, because APIs time out.
  2. Idempotency, so a retried run does not create a duplicate record or send a second email.
  3. Alerts to Telegram or email with the failing step and data.
  4. Logs you can search when something looks wrong.
  5. Documentation so someone else can understand each flow.

Frequently asked questions

  • Often at volume, because n8n bills one execution per workflow run regardless of steps, while Zapier bills per action. For very simple flows the difference is small.

  • Yes. n8n’s licence allows a developer to build and run workflows for clients on their own instance and charge for the work, as long as clients cannot create or edit workflows themselves.

  • Usually per unit, since Make’s paid plans start at around $9 for 10,000 credits while Zapier’s start at about $20 for 750 tasks. Billing units differ, so compare against your actual workflow steps.

  • When volume is very high, logic is complex, reliability is critical or data must stay inside your own systems.
